I second that... I know you want to keep it open for purposes of growing the group but I think this would make a lot of users happy

Privacy has just been changed to closed. It will no longer show up on your newsfeed.

To make your friends happy we have changed the settings of the group from open to closed. The only difference with the group being private is all your posts wont be visible to them and wont clog up their newsfeed. The group policies originally in place by facebook were different. So we decided to switch it after several requests.
